How Long Does a Mattress Last?

When buying a mattress, we tend to bother more about how comfortable the mattress is than how durable it is. However, it is essential to consider how durable a mattress is and how long it will last because buying a mattress isn’t something you can go out and do all the time. Mattresses have different lifespans, depending on the material they are made.

The underlying fact is that a mattress should be able to provide adequate comfort and support throughout its lifetime. After reading this article, you should be able to estimate the lifetime of any mattress, based mainly on the material used; this will help you in choosing a suitable mattress whenever you need one and also, you will be able to estimate the lifetime of the mattresses you own already.

Foam Mattresses

There are different types of foams used to make mattresses, but the most common all foam mattresses are memory foam. Memory foam mattresses are among mattresses that have the most extended lifespan, they are durable, and they do not sag easily.

You should know that without adequate care, mattresses can get spoilt quicker than they ought to. The lifespan of foam mattresses is also dependent on the density; the denser the foam, the longer the lifespan. Low-density foam mattresses can last from four to six years, while higher density foam mattresses can last up to ten years.

Latex Mattresses

Latex Mattresses are not as typical as foam mattresses, but in reality, they are the most durable mattresses around. Latex mattresses may look like foam mattresses but the material used to make them are quite different.

If maintained well enough, latex mattresses can have a lifespan of up to fifteen years; the lifespan may, however, vary a little depending on whether the latex used in making the mattresses is natural or synthetic.

Innerspring Mattresses

Typically, innerspring mattresses aren’t known for their durability. Just like the name implies, innerspring mattresses have coiled springs in them, and they give an exciting bounce when you sleep on them; this bouncy feel is why some people like innerspring mattresses.

Although they are generally not as durable as other types of mattresses, they vary in durability depending on the size of the springs in them. Mattresses with high gauge wire in their springs tend to last longer than those that have small gauge wire in their spring.

Typically, innerspring mattresses that have high wire gauge can last up to eight years while those with small gauge wire may not last more than five years.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine the innerspring design with a soft layer like that of foam or latex. The durability of hybrid mattresses depends on the gauge of the wire in the springs and at the same time the density of the latex or foam that forms the soft layer.

It is quite hard to estimate the lifespan of hybrid mattresses, but in general, hybrid mattresses that have high gauge wire combined with high-density foam or latex tend to last longer than those made with lower gauge wire in their springs and low-density foam or latex. A right hybrid mattress should be able to up to seven or eight years.

Waterbed Mattresses

Waterbed mattresses are quite durable. It all comes down to how well the bed is maintained at the end of the day, but in general, waterbed mattresses can last from twelve to fifteen years. Unlike innerspring mattresses, they do not have springs that can break in them.

The only thing that can make the lifespan of a waterbed shorter is if it gets punctured, and in reality, it occurs very rarely. If you maintain your waterbed mattress well enough, it may last you for decades.

Things You Can Do To Increase The Lifespan of Your Mattress

The general lifespan of different types of mattresses have been discussed above, but the fact remains that the type of maintenance a mattress gets will affect how long it will last. There are some things you can do on your part to make your mattress last longer, and some of these things are:

Rotate and Flip Your Mattress Regularly

Rotating and flipping your mattress regularly ensures even wear and tear. Doing this will reduce the rate at which your mattress depresses, and it increases the lifespan. You should try to flip and rotate your mattress at least once every six months to increase the durability.

Use A Mattress Topper

It may not be apparent to the eyes, but things like sweat and dead skin cells will weaken a mattress in the long run, a good mattress topper will protect the mattress from things like this.

Regular Cleaning

How to clean your mattress?

Even when you use protective clothing, you should still clean your mattress regularly. This is to totally get rid of bacteria, mold, and mildew that can affect the durability of a mattress in the long run.
